Abstract
The transport characteristics of a pair of quantum wires that were coupled to each other by means of a quantum dot were analyzed by studying the influence of many-body interactions on them. Tunnel coupling of a wire gave rise to an associated peak in its density of states under conditions where a local magnetic moment was formed in one of the wires. The density could be detected directly in a conductance measurement. Numerical calculations were performed of the correction to the conductance of the fixed wire. For the detection of local magnetic moment formation, coupled quantum wires were found to be highly efficient.
