Detection of 2,4-dinitrotoluene using microcantilever sensors

Abstract

We report the gas phase detection of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) with a SXFA-[poly(1-(4-hydroxy-4-trifluoromethyl-5,5,5-trifluoro)pent-1-enyl) methylsiloxane]-polymer-coated microcantilevers. These studies show that a detection sensitivity of 300 parts-per-trillion (ppt) could be achieved within a few seconds of exposure of the sensor to the vapor stream. The response is reversible and the sensor coating has been shown to be able to withstand repeated exposure to varying levels of DNT concentrations over a year.
