DESIGNING WITH NON-HUMANS: Ralph Ghoche in Conversation With Joyce Hwang

In this reprinted interview from November 12, 2021 entitled “Designing with Non-Humans” Ralph Ghoche interviews Joyce Hwang, architect and associate professor at SUNY Buffalo. Hwang is the founder of “Ants of the Prairie,” an architectural firm that addresses ecological issues through creative means. Hwang discusses her perspective on “architect as advocate” including the history of projects for animals as well as a series of works designed by Hwang in collaboration with students and project teams in which the animals are the clients, users and stakeholders while humans become the audience. Hwang and Ghoche discuss the work her teams have developed for multiple species of birds, bees and bats and how these fit into the scope of work for non-human species.
