Abstract

Drone misuse and trespass in areas such as airports and military bases is becoming a pressing concern. A proposed solution to this issue is a drone system that is capable of autonomously flying and capturing other target drones by means of ejected tethered nets. Components of this system include a pressurized-air powered net launcher device, an on-board companion and flight computer, and the drone itself. This paper examines the performance of a physical prototype net launcher to be attached to a drone, and compares experimental results against a simulation of net launch. In addition to providing a low cost and low weight solution for a net launcher, the designed solution allows validation of a simulator for the dynamics of capture of objects such as space debris with nets.
