Abstract
Deictic signs symbolically denote some aspect or component of the speech situation - the extra-linguistic context in which they are used, such as the speaker, time, or place of an utterance. Although they are symbolic as types, their tokens in specific contexts represent the particular component of the speech situation indexically. The semiotic nature of this kind of reference, its exact communicative prerequisites and functions, its acquisition by children, and its processing have long puzzled scholars throughout the cognitive sciences. This article presents an overview of deictic signs and introduces some major research themes.
