Abstract

In many parts of North America, special permits are issued to heavy vehicles without considering their cumulative effect on steel bridge components. Such overloads may initiate crack propagation and therefore shorten the service life of bridges. Here, a fatigue-based methodology is developed to assess the reduction in service life of bridges due to heavy permit-trucks.
