Culture and professional education: The experiences of native american social workers

While much attention has been paid to cultural competence in assisting clients, little has been directed to evaluating the degree to which social work education respects the cultural norms and values of students from diverse populations. A qualitative survey was used to explore the experiences of Native Americans in social work education. The amount of cultural content in social work education has increased in recent years, yet most respondents identified the need for more cultural material. Although there are struggles for non-Anglo students pursuing an education grounded in Anglo cultural norms, supports are sometimes available to balance them.
