Abstract

The ATC-34 project is a five year joint study by the Natural Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER) and the Applied Technology Council (ATC) into response modification factors and other critical earthquake-resistant design code issues. It aims to provide: an overview of U.S. seismic design codes and practices for new buildings; a critique of current seismic design codes, a comprehensive statement of their strengths and deficiencies; and the identification of issues that should be considered in the development of new rational model seismic code.
