Abstract
We use an optimized variational theory to calculate the surface energy of ideal metals, a model recently suggested by Shor and Rose [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 2519 (1991)]. Excellent agreement is found between calculated and experimental surface energies of simple metals.
