N2 - The Solar Decathlon brings together college and university teams from around the globe to compete to design and build houses that demonstrate the advantages of solar energy by showing how we can live in comfort in energy-efficient, solar-powered homes. The solar homes serve to demonstrate new, environmentally sound, and cost-effective technologies to meet modern energy demands using only the solar energy incident to the house as the sole source of energy In the Fall of 2002, 14 teams from across the United States and Puerto Rico came together to participate in the competition in Washington, D.C. In the Fall of 2005, 18 teams from around the world will participate again in the competition. This paper describes how the student led team at Cornell University has organized its project team, how interdisciplinary teams at Cornell have worked together to solve issues of design and construction, and how the Solar Decathlon pedagogical model challenges students to learn skills normally outside the scope of the traditional architecture and engineering curriculum.
