Abstract

Source characterization is a fundamental function in fusion process design; this chapter addresses the issues involved when the characteristics of contextual information include uncertain and imprecise qualities and examines the associated impacts on computational operations. An overview regarding the general issue of uncertainty in fusion processes is provided, along with a survey of literature that addresses uncertainty in contextual information and the related issues of the ontology of and quality factors for contextual information. An extended use case discussion is also provided related to the role of and specific exploitation strategies for contextual information to support threat assessment for harbor protection; this use case derives from in-depth research at the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE; La Spezia, Italy).
