COMPRESSING AND ABSTRACTING OF INFORMATION FOR INFORMATION UTILITIES.

Abstract

Abstracting is discussed in the framework of data base organization for on-line retrieval. Criteria for the quality of abstracts are suggested and thoughts on how to produce high-quality abstracts are presented. A standardized outline for abstracts is given and applied to two articles. Abstracting is seen as a mapping of content elements from the article into the structural framework given in the standardized outline. Further research is suggested on both the occurrence of content elements in original articles and abstracts and on the impact of the different content elements in the abstract on the user.
