Abstract
Speech comprehension studies in dogs can potentially shed new light on the evolution of language and on developmental processes that make word learning possible. Interpreting the results of such experiments is complicated, however, by the wide variety of learning and generalization mechanisms that dogs may rely on during tests of their understanding.
