Abstract
Composite sorbents were prepared by depositing approximately monolayers of Br2 or IC1 on activated carbon. Methane adsorption remained equal on these sorbents whereas the adsorption of N2 was reduced. The selectivity ratio of CH4 N2 was increased to approximately 4 on the composite sorbents, making them promising candidates for CH4 N2 separation. The reduction of adsorption seems to be caused by the occupation of the sites by the quadrupolar Br2 or IC1 molecules; these sites would otherwise adsorb N2, which is also quadrupolar.
