Abstract
The intensity of the (222) forbidden x-ray reflection in Si and InSb was measured as a function of high hydrostatic pressure. A few kbars prior to the pressure induced transformation to the metallic β-Sn structure the (222) intensity decreases sharply. We interpret this anomalous behavior as due either to smearing of the valence bond-charge in anticipation of the metallic state, or to increased anharmonicity in the thermal vibrations. The role of zone boundary TA phonons is considered.
