Abstract
Pantelleria is a volcanic island located in the straight of Sicily midway between Sicily and Libya. The island is famous for its strongly peralkaline rhyolites (Pantellerites). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe analysis of vapor-phase products in the green ignimbrite from Pantelleria were completed to provide information on the process of vapor-phase crystallization. While the volcanic rock cools, vapor-phase crystallization occurs by the growth of crystals in pores through the action of a hot vapor.
