Abstract

Humic and fulvic substances in natural waters were first suggested as trihalomethane precursors by Rook and Bellar et al. After these discoveries, research in the field assumed one of two directions. Approaches have included reducing precursor concentrations, removing THMs after formation, and changing disinfectants. This work combines the previously mentioned two research directions by examining the interactions between monochloramine and naturally occurring organics, and by conducting characterization studies of the chloramine-produced, nonpurgeable total organic halide (NPTOX).
