Abstract
The DC arc induced by insulation defect and loose joint in a DC power system is difficult to extinguish and to be detected, which may easily lead to accidents, such as fire and explosion. In this paper, the series DC arc is simulated by using a stepper motor to drag an electrode away from the fixed one. The voltage and current of the DC arc are detected for different gap distances, electrode shapes and speeds. Based on the experimental data, the U-I characteristic of the DC arc is obtained, and the influencing factors of the DC arc characteristics are analyzed. The spectrum analysis of the arc current shows that the high frequency energy concetrates in the band of 10 kHz to 200 kHz. In addition, by analyzing the pulse characteristics of output voltage waveform in corresponding window of time, a DC arc fault detection method is proposed based on the abrupt change of voltage output.
