Abstract
A new method to conjugate keratinocyte growth factors (KGF) to fibrin gels by attaching fluorescent matrix binding peptides to the protein surface was investigated. The best gel formulation for sustained delivery, by degrading fibrin gels with plasmin to mimic cell mediated degradation, was also studied. It was found that the plasmin mediated degradation recovered the KGF protein without any changes in molecular weight. The results suggested that fibrin may be a suitable biomaterial for controlled release of growth factors to increase cellular migration and growth, promoting faster healing of the skin.
