Abstract
1. 1. In normoxia land crabs have: O2 consumption ( dot VO2), 50μl/g per hr; gill ventilation ( dot VG) 16ml air/min; O2 extraction, 8 ml O2/l air; heart rate, 60 beats/min. 2. 2. In short term hypoxia dot VO2 was relatively constant above PO2 = 5 torr; dot VG increased a of two-fold; bradycardia occurred. 3. 3. In acute hypoxia ventilation was reduced and gas flow through the gill chamber was irregular or reversed. 4. 4. Tachycardia and an O2 debt were measured once crabs were returned to normoxic conditions.
