Abstract

1. 1. In normoxia land crabs have: O₂ consumption ( dot V_O2), 50μl/g per hr; gill ventilation ( dot V_G) 16ml air/min; O₂ extraction, 8 ml O₂/l air; heart rate, 60 beats/min. 2. 2. In short term hypoxia dot V_O2 was relatively constant above P_O2 = 5 torr; dot V_G increased a of two-fold; bradycardia occurred. 3. 3. In acute hypoxia ventilation was reduced and gas flow through the gill chamber was irregular or reversed. 4. 4. Tachycardia and an O₂ debt were measured once crabs were returned to normoxic conditions.
