Abstract

Over 1000 women per year in the United States who previously had augmentation mammoplasty will develop breast cancer. Augmentation and implants appear to have no effect on the risk of breast cancer. The effectiveness of breast cancer screening in these women may be reduced. Treatment includes stage appropriate local and adjuvant systemic therapy. Breast conserving surgery, previously thought to be contraindicated, may be appropriate for some women in this setting.
