Abstract

The article discusses the design process undertaken by an intergenerational team of three adult researchers and seven elementary school students to create, using information visualization techniques, a display of a taxonomy used in a Web-based children's portal. It describes and discusses the application of a user-centred design methodology, Bonded Design, to accomplish this task over 12 sessions. The techniques include viewing and critiquing existing visualizations, brainstorming to generate new ideas, paper prototyping design ideas both individually and in small groups, and building a consensus on a final low-tech
