Body Composition in Detoxified Alcoholics

Body composition was evaluated in healthy detoxified alcoholics (aged 20–39) and lifestyle controls, with the expectation that prolonged, excessive consumption of alcohol may bring about nutritional or toxicologic alterations in the relationship between body fat and lean body mass. Body fat was assessed by measurements of skinfold thickness and by means of bioelectric impedance methodology. No noteworthy differences were observed between alcoholics and controls with regard to the relationship between lean body mass and body fat or in the relationship between extracellular and intracellular water. It would appear that 15–20 years of heavy alcohol consumption does not necessarily alter body composition in healthy, young alcoholics.
