Abstract
The bandwidth of lumped electro-optic waveguide devices is shown to be limited by the intrinsic inductance as well as the capacitance of the electrodes. Under the optimal design the bandwidth-length product is calculated to be 1.8 GHz cm for LiNbO3. The electric field distribution, the overlap of the electric and optical fields, and the gap-width dependence of the switching voltage are also discussed.
