Abstract

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY SIBO occurs when normal defensive functions, such as gastric acid, pancreatic and biliary secretions, the presence of mucus, and intestinal motility, are disrupted and stasis ensues. Absence of the ileocecal valve in the distal small bowel, which acts as a mechanical barrier against the colonization of the small bowel with colonic bacteria, promotes SIBO.
