Abstract

Various techniques used in the design of asynchronous and self-timed systems are presented. The methods discussed include traditional asynchronous sequential circuit design, a graph-theoretic approach, and methods based on CSP specifications. Example chips developed such as asynchronous RISCs and microprogrammed controllers are presented. The challenges in asynchronous ASIC design and the most recent developments are reported.
