Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to explain and provide a conceptual understanding of the application and design of intelligent tutoring systems in education. The authors will examine potential applications of intelligent systems in the classroom. The first example illustrates a means to educate students within science-education teacher-preparation programs. The second means is as a computational simulation and model of student learning and the third is as a means to assess student learning in science education. The theoretical questions addressed in this paper are what are the technological obstacles and modes of use for an artificially intelligent system as a tool for educational use.
