Are the vela speedups evidence for the formation of a neutronic quantum crystal?

Abstract

The giant Vela glitches are attributed to crustquakes which are induced by a shrinking of the interior, which in turn follows from the formation of a neutronic quantum crystal. The timescale for the epoch of quakes is set by the cooling of the neutron star, and for the interval between individual quakes by the crust's deformation. A total neutrino luminosity of Lν ∼ 1039 to 1040 erg/s is estimated together with thermal radiation peaking at an energy of some keV.
