Abstract
In this paper we describe the method of zero crossings, our experiences with it, and potential applications in digital mapping. After a short introduction to the method with references to more detailed sources, results of applying zero crossings in digital photogrammetry (edge detection) and in cartography (line generalization) are reported. The positive experiences gained in previous projects suggest to apply the method of zero crossings in other areas of digital mapping. We describe current projects concerned with generalizing surfaces, with data compression of DEM's and with shape analysis and feature extraction. -Author
