An evaluation of two residential green building programs: Leed for homes and the Solar Decathlon

Abstract

In the Fall of 2005, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes program. Concurrent to the release of the LEED program, the U.S. Department of Energy hosted the Solar Decathlon competition that aimed to advance solar energy technology and application, to promote energy efficient building design and technology, and to educate the public about the benefits and viability of solar energy. This paper examines and compares the LEED for Homes rating system to the Solar Decathlon contest regulations in order to understand how these programs define green building. By categorizing green building criteria and dividing each program's credit allocations into distinct areas, this paper shows where each program has placed its greatest focus. By analyzing the credit requirements and contest regulations, this paper shows how each program has translated its focus into specific regulations or requirements to guide the public.
