Abstract

Electron micrographs of thin sections from Nephrotoma suturalis spermatocytes show microtubules aligned parallel to the elongated mitochondria that surround the meiotic spindle. This arrangement may provide an explanation for the orderly orientation of mitochondria around the spindle, and therefore may account for the equal distribution of mitochondria to all four spermatids. This interpretation suggests another function for microtubules: aligning cellular components (other than chromosomes) during cell division.
