N2 - We discuss algebraic cycles on singular varieties, in relation to the Grothendieck group of vector bundles. This theory, which is still not fully worked out, seems to admit some surprises. On the other hand, conjectured aspects of the refined structure of cycle groups of nonsingular varieties, predicted by motivic considerations, seem to have plausible extensions to singular varieties, which can be verified in some nontrivial examples.
