Abstract

The following constants are defined for an acid: ionization or ion-pair formation, [formula omitted] dissociation, [formula omitted]; and over-all dissociation, [formula omitted]. Similar constants are defined for bases. The formation constant of the salt of an (indicator) base, I, and an acid is given by [formula omitted]. The strength of an acid depends upon the kind of (indicator) base used for reference and vice versa. From spectrophotometric measurements at 25° with p-naphtholbenzein (PBN) as indicator base, the following constants have been derived: [formula omitted] (HTs = p-tolnenesulfonic acid), [formula omitted]. The heat of reaction of I + HX ⇄ IH+X- is -7 kcal./mole with HCl or HTs as HX and PNB as I.
