Abstract

A sparse third-order Volterra model is utilized to simulate nonlinear bridge aerodynamics and attendant response under turbulent fluctuations. The Volterra model is pruned from aerodynamics point of view, which significantly reduces the computational effort in the nonlinear modeling. The first-, second- And thirdorder Volterra kernels are identified using the least-square technique with the input-output pairs obtained from the numerical simulations or wind-tunnel experiments. Both simulation studies of numerical and experimental cases show that the designed sparse third-orderVolterra model can simulate the bridge aerodynamic nonlinearity with high fidelity. Finally, the robustness of simulation is verified using an upgraded Volterra scheme.
