A simple technique for accessory papilla sphincteroplasty in pancreas divisum

Pancreas divisum (PD) results from embryologic nonfusion of the dorsal and ventral buds. (1). PD had been associated with an increased incidence of idiopathic pancreatitis (2), which is postulated to result from stenosis of the accessory papilla (AP) orifice (3). Sphincteroplasty of the AP is the recommended treatment for patients with PD and recurrent episodes of idiopathic pancreatitis (2,4). A useful method for performing AP sphincteroplasty using a modification of the Seldinger catheter-over-wire technique is described herein.
