Abstract
The isotherm for the underpotential deposition (UPD) of mercury from 0.2M H2SO4 solutions of mercurous or mercuric ions is the same. At the equilibrium potential of a liquid mercury electrode in either of the solutions, the surface coverage of mercury species is 1.9 × 10-9 g·atom/cm2. However, only faradaic charge sufficient to deposit 1.7 × 10-9 g·atm/cm2 of Hg(O) is consumed and ~2 × 1010 g·atm/cm2 of (Hg(I))2 appear to be adsorbed along with the UPD Hg(O).
