A ring-disk study of the effect of trace chloride ion on the anodic behavior of gold in 0.2 M H2SO4

Abstract

The adsorption of chloride on gold electrodes in 0.2 M H2SO4 was studied. Chloride ion is adsorbed on gold electrodes in the potential region -0.2 V ≦ED≦+1.8 V. Adsorbed chloride causes an increase in the amount of soluble gold produced during the anodic and cathodic parts of a potential cycle at the electrode. Isopotential points indicate that adsorbed chloride exists in two different states on a gold surface. Approximately 2.2×10-7 M chloride is present in the supporting electrolyte as a trace impurity.
