Abstract

A novel stacking circuit for grouping all ones in an 8-bits long binary sequence is proposed. This circuit employs a combination of symmetric stacking, multiplexing, and barrel-shifting. The proposed circuit is found to be at least 24% faster, in VLSI simulations, than other designs in the literature. The area does not increase significantly, and the average power consumption increases by 43%. Also, an application of the proposed stacker to sorting is discussed.
