Abstract
An integrated computer-based system which supports the technical and social requirements of cellular manufacturing was designed, developed and implemented at an ailing aircraft component manufacturer to improve productivity and quality. Major challenges faced by the plant included a maturing workforce, excessive scrap, rework, lack of coordination, poor delivery performance, and a general lack of technical processes and product understanding. Processes were out of control and as a result, productivity and quality suffered. This developmental case illustrates the need for a sociotechnical systems approach to cellular manufacturing, where personnel and technological requirements are jointly met.
