Abstract
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of the Weight-A-Thon, a fund-raising event sponsored by the American Cancer Society of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, as a community approach to weight control. Two hundred thirty-two people participated in the 1979 Weight-A-Thon. Their weight losses during the 6-week event averaged 8.3 pounds, which compares favorably with weight losses in more intensive face-to-face programs. Participants tended to gain weight after the program, but 7 months after the Weight-A-Thon still had an overall weight loss of 4.5 pounds. These data suggest that community fund-raising activities such as the Weight-A-Thon may assist in the treatment and prevention of obesity. Recommendations are made for improving the long-term effectiveness of the Weight-A-Thon program.
